WPPI 2012 – My Thoughts

(This originally appeared on the Buzzworthy Success Blog in March 2012)

First of all, every staff member at WPPI 2012 did an incredible job!  Those of you who know me know that I don’t randomly hand out compliments.   This was one of the best run conventions I’ve ever attended!
Ok, that’s the good news.  The bad news; I’m a little concerned about our industry.  Never before have I seen so many new photographers in one place at one time!  Now, you may be asking, “Why is this bad news?” It’s bad news because I’m not sure the experienced professionals are seeing the value of coming to the convention anymore.  From what I was told by a number of long time studio owners, their impression is that WPPI seems to be catering to the emerging photographers and that’s irritating the established pros.
So what’s my take?  I believe everyone can find answers that will enhance their business by attending WPPI.  I also believe that it’s your responsibility to research speakers and choose your programs selectively.  We were proud and honored to present the final platform at WPPI University.  The caliber of questions and the interest of the audience were incredible.  The “newbies” asked tons of questions and took pages of notes!  None of them gave me the impression that they were out to undercut prices in their market areas or supply inferior images.  They wanted to be taught the right way to do business AND the right way to photograph.  I applaud that!
WPPI 2013 – Good idea, bad idea?
Book it now!  No matter where your business is at, show up with your research done and be ready to share and learn.  Instead of worrying about who the newbies are and who the experienced pros are; show up with a spirit of sharing and become one with all the others at WPPI who simply want to have a career that they love while creating beautiful images for their clients.  Isn’t that what it’s supposed to be about?
We WILL see you at WPPI 2013!
