It’s an honor for Sondra and me to be part of WPPI-U in Atlanta. Why do we love doing it? It’s simple; we were both new to the industry once.
In the last couple of years, there’s been a lot of negative talk about “newbies” or “emerging” photographers, the term we prefer. The word on the street is that almost every challenge being faced by seasoned veterans is caused by new photographers who are ruining the industry for everyone. To me, that’s just crap.
Here’s a fact: EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER OUT THERE WAS AN EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AT ONE POINT IN THEIR CAREER! How could it be any other way? If it wasn’t for the help I received from the established pros when I first started in photography, I would not be doing this today! If the established pros had shunned me way back then and simply saw me as a nuisance, I probably would have taken a different career path.
What’s that I’m hearing from some of you? “Well Jerry, the newbies are undercutting us and they’re producing shoddy work!” C’mon; wake up! There are seasoned pros that are undercutting you and doing shoddy work! It’s a confidence and education thing, NOT a matter of how long someone’s been doing this!
Sondra and I want to make a difference to EVERYONE in the photographic business; not just to the established pros and not just to the emerging photographers. Let’s work together to teach the new members of our profession what excellence in business and in photography is. Remember what it was like for you when you first started in photography. How did you want to be treated? Think about that the next time you have the opportunity to help someone who needs your help in becoming a “seasoned” pro!
I welcome your comments!
